Brace Yourself

Stepping into the role of CTO is both exciting and demanding. The first days and weeks are critical for laying the groundwork for long-term success.

During this time, your most important task is to gain a clear picture of your new environment: How does the team function? Are there acute issues? What is the product’s current state, and how robust is the existing tech stack?

While you immerse yourself in these details, building relationships remains paramount.

Engaging in one-on-one conversations with team members and key stakeholders helps you uncover expectations, pinpoint bottlenecks, and identify potential quick wins. In addition, you will gain insights into the culture and policies that shape the organization.

These 1:1s are an opportunity to listen and learn. Most of your peers are there for years and have very deep insights. They have a good understanding of the good, the bad and the ugly. Don't kill off the flow of information. Listen carefully.

These interviews also offer a window into the company’s culture and internal processes. Insights that might not be apparent from the outside.
